Hip Hop Hoodios

Comprised entirely of bilingual musicians from Jewish/Latino backgrounds, the members of Hip Hop Hoodios are linked by a common love for Latin alternative music, or rock and rap "en Espanol".? But don't call these guys the Jewish answer to Tenacious D or the Latino respuesta to the Beastie Boys - Hip Hop Hoodios are out to change the notions and preconceptions of Latin music entirely.

The brainchild of Josue Noriega (whose odd family musical lineage includes a grandfather that wrote songs for Frank Sinatra, and distant family relationship to Kurt Weill), Hip Hop Hoodios was a concept that first came to mind while he was a sophomore at Cornell University in 1996 ("hoodio" is a twist on the word "judio" - Spanish for "Jew").?

Hip Hop Hoodios features members of major Latin- alternative groups including Caifanes/La Barranca, Orixa, and Los Mocosos. Many of the members come from mixed Latino-Jewish backgrounds, with heritage from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Uruguay. The band's multi-ethnic background is reflected in the music, which includes a merengue hiphop version of 'Hava Nagila' reworked as 'Havana Nagilah', as well as a reggae/punk version of the sephardic Hanukkah song 'Ocho Kandelikas'.

Viva la Guantanamera EP benefiting Amnesty International

¡Oye! Hip Hop Hoodíos has just released the "Viva la Guantanamera EP," a special digital-only album benefiting Amnesty International. The new song "Viva la Guantanamera" is an allstar collaboration with members of two Grammy-winning artists (Ozomatli & The Klezmatics), and also features contributions from Kemo The Blaxican (of Latin hip-hop pioneers Delinquent Habits), and Walter Miranda (Beastie Boys, Plastilina Mosh). Hip Hop Hoodíos are tying in with Amnesty International's campaign to close Guantanamo Bay Prison and encourage the full restoration of due process, and are donating 18% of net profits from digital sales of the "Viva la Guantanamera" single to Amnesty.

The "Viva la Guantanamera" track was produced by Wildog of Ozomatli. The new EP features 4 new songs and remixes.

We're excited to report that Amnesty International has initially committed to inclusion of the new Hip Hop Hoodios track "Viva La Guantanamera" on multiple Amnesty and Amnesty-related websites. We'll keep you posted as news develops. 4 new tracks of trilingual mayhem for a good cause - ¡¡Orale!!

Agua Pa' La Gente

The full-length follow-up to Hip Hop Hoodíos' acclaimed 2002 debut release 'Raza Hoodia', the new album 'Agua Pa' La Gente' was produced by Happy Sanchez (Los Mocosos) and features appearances from numerous heavy-hitters in the world of Latin alternative and Jewish music.

Los Hoodíos realized that delivering a follow-up to 'Raza Hoodia' (recently certified as the biggest selling Latino-Jewish hip-hop album of ALL TIME), would not be easy. But whereas 'Raza Hoodia' was recorded in one drunken weekend on a mere $500 budget, the new album 'Agua Pa' La Gente' was recorded on a Cirque du Soleil-sized budget over the course of FIFTY TWO drunken weekends. In other words, expect more of the trilingual mayhem you've come to love - but this time, with a sonically-enhanced psychosemitic Latin sheen that would make even a silver apple go rolling home, sighing softly.
